Keremeos Bones: Possible Native Burial Site

The discovery of human bones at a construction site in Keremeos yesterday has turned out to be a possible native burial site. The Coroner's Office from Penticton viewed the scene on Wednesday afternoon. They have since been in contact with an archeologist, and are waiting for results from that.
What we can tell you at this point after speaking with Cpl Cristine Makepeace in charge of the Keremeos detachment, is that the bones discovered are thought to be approximately 100 years old and aboriginal in origin. It may be a native burial site as the First Nations used to travel the Okanagan Similkameen adjusting to the Climate and Conditions many years ago. Keremeos RCMP are still on the scene waiting for more from the Coroner's office before any more work is done. If it turns out to be a burial site used in the past, then it may have ramifications for the construction that was planned for the site on 12 St. in Keremeos. 6/15/2006 8:26:19 AM
